Planning a visit to Athens? Whether you’re exploring the ancient Acropolis or soaking in panoramic city views from the comfort of a motorcoach, packing the right essentials can make your tour much more enjoyable. Here’s a helpful guide for what to bring along on a day of sightseeing in the Greek capital.
1. Sunglasses & High-SPF Sunscreen
Athens enjoys over 250 sunny days a year. A quality pair of sunglasses (preferably with UV protection) and a sunscreen with SPF 30+ or higher are must-haves—even during spring and autumn.
💡 Local Tip: Sunscreen is available in most pharmakeía (pharmacies), but it’s often more expensive than back home.
2. Comfortable Walking Shoes
While our tours are motorcoach-based, some of the historical sites—like the Parthenon or Roman Agora—require short walks over uneven, ancient stone paths. A pair of breathable sneakers or walking sandals with good grip will keep you comfortable and safe.
3. A Hat or Cap
Protect your head and neck from the Mediterranean sun. A foldable wide-brimmed hat or a simple cap can make a big difference, especially from May to September.
💡 Greek Phrase: “Κάνει ζέστη!” (Káni zésti!) = “It’s hot!”
4. Reusable Water Bottle
Hydration is key! Bring a refillable bottle. Tap water in Athens is safe to drink, and there are several public fountains (especially near parks and squares).
🏛️ Many of our coaches also provide bottled water, but we love it when our guests help reduce plastic waste.
5. Smartphone or Camera (Fully Charged)
Athens is a paradise for photography lovers. From ancient ruins to lively street scenes, there’s always something to capture. Don’t forget:
-
Charging cable (EU plug is Type C, 220V)
-
Power bank for extra juice during the day
6. Light Jacket or Scarf
Especially if you’re visiting in spring (March–May) or autumn (October–November), pack a light jacket. Our coaches are air-conditioned, and evenings can cool down even after a sunny day.
7. ID, Tickets & Some Euros
Always carry a passport or national ID (especially for EU travelers), your booking confirmation (digital or printed), and some cash (EUR). Small purchases or souvenirs in local markets may not accept cards.
💡 Tip: Many shops and restaurants in the historic center accept cards, but it’s handy to have small change for tips or quick buys.
8. Hand Sanitizer & Tissues
Although our motorcoaches are cleaned daily, it’s a good idea to carry hand sanitizer and tissues or wet wipes—especially when visiting busy archaeological sites or public restrooms.
9. Headphones or Earbuds
If your tour includes an audio guide app or you like to listen to music or podcasts between stops, bring a pair of headphones. They’re also handy for airport travel or waiting in lines.
Bonus: Extra Room in Your Bag
Leave a little space for:
-
Greek honey, olive oil, or herbs
-
Local crafts like ceramics or evil eye charms
-
A quick souvlaki or bougatsa (local pastry) on the go!
Final Tip: Dress for Comfort & Culture
While there’s no strict dress code, many churches and monasteries we pass or visit may require shoulders and knees to be covered. Lightweight, modest clothing is always a good choice.
